A Zen Approach to Getting More Done
December 31, 2008
Ever notice that being busy and being productive have nothing to do with each other? Have you ever worked all day and wondered how the big important tasks somehow slipped by? Well, Leo Babuata of Zen Habits just turned me on to “Big Rocks First,” an amazing way of making sure the important things always get done.
I’ve been using this process for two weeks now, and have found that it forces me to identify which tasks on my list are the most critical, and enables me to laser-focus on those items first. I have been “rocking” through my to-do list like never before.
Curious? If you want to hear more, I describe the Big Rocks process in my first podcast:

Are You Ready To Rock?
If you’re ready to start integrating these concepts, I recommend that you check out Robert Allen’s Getting Things Done, the original to-do list manifesto, and Tim Ferriss’ The 4-Hour Work Week, which gives you a glimpse of why these concepts are so important. (Don’t you want a four hour work week?)
I also recommend Leo’s book Zen to Done, which uses a very simple Zen approach to extend Allen’s original system, and provide hands-on, practical approach to the “doing.”

Wonderful two books. I’ve seen both David Allen and Tim Ferris present their ideas in person. They ‘walk the walk’ of their methods. Since implementing GTD in my Outlook Tasks I’ve seen my productivity improve 50%. Ferris makes more outrageous demands. I’ve enjoyed sampling some of them. Another resource for anyone trying to grow a business and get the ‘big rock’ of more clients is ‘More Clients Now!’ by C.J. Hayden with a systematic approach to filling the client pipeline that fits with Allen’s system. Thanks Lee.
