Beautiful WordPress Theme Designs
February 27, 2008
I often help my coaching clients to build simple, elegant WordPress web sites and blogs without fluff or useless features. People always ask if I’m designer or a “web guy”. But the truth is, most of us can build a really good-looking web presence without being a designer.
WordPress Themes from Sandbox
The guys at Sandbox held a WordPress theme design competition, and anyone can use the designers’ winning themes. Our original Techology Dojo site used a theme called Oriole, designed by Jason Porritt. This was a great “starter” theme for us, but we outgrew it when we needed to have more than four main pages to our site.
Customizing WordPress Themes
Once you find a theme you like, you can adapt it to make it your own. How? Well, you can learn a thing or two about Cascading Style Sheets, also known as CSS. Or you can hire a web developer who is an expert in CSS, like our friend Ross Chapman. He can help you modify the CSS to change the color, fonts or layout of the site.
Did you already pay a graphic designer create your dream layout in Photoshop? Ross can turn that into a WordPress site too. It’s that easy.
Where Do I Start?
With tools like WordPress and CSS, creating a great-looking, professional web site is not rocket science. The first step is to compose a list of web sites and themes you like and write down what you like about them.
If this sounds very complicated, you can also work with Technology Coach Lee Rodrigues to figure out which WordPress themes, widgets and plugins will give you the appearance and functionality you need for your business.
